Earth Day: It Might Just Blow Your Mind

| By: Amy Phillips-Gary

How often do you pause and just marvel at the wonders that are this planet?

I know that I don’t very often.

It’s pretty mind blowing to think about what goes on when you put a small seed in fertile soil, add water and sunshine and it magically transforms into something so beautiful and often delicious too.

It is almost beyond my comprehension to contemplate the way that the tides move in and out and that a forest will burn from time to time in order to clear brush and end up healthier in the long run.

Life tends to move at the speed of light for many of us. We can barely keep our to do lists under control. Who has time to stop and watch those sweet smelling roses grow?

To me, this is what Earth Day is all about… a reminder that we live on an amazing planet. It’s important to fully acknowledge that fact.

Despite what the news reports tell us, there are so many things that are healthy and running smoothly on this planet that we call home. We grow delicious and nutritious food from the soil, we breathe in oxygen from our precious trees and we stay hydrated with its water.

I’m not here to dispute climate change or global warming. I’m also not naively arguing that there aren’t areas in which we humans could be gentler on and live more harmoniously with our Earth.

Of course it would be beneficial for us to do this.

I just want us to live greener and be more eco-friendly for different reasons.

There’s fear running rampant all over the place these days. From that place of fear, you might feel guilty if you don’t recycle everything you can, if your home isn’t as energy efficient as it could be or if you drive your “gas guzzler” car when you could ride your bike.

Perhaps you judge your neighbor whose garbage can overflows with cardboard and recyclable plastic or maybe you shake your head in disgust as you see someone drive down the street in a Hummer.

Guilt, judgment and fear have no place in Earth Day commemorations. In fact, I believe that they aren’t helpful at all, on any day.

I propose that Earth Day be devoted to shining spotlights on the people and practices that help nurture and show appreciation for the Earth.

Let’s celebrate those innovations that will show us how to run our cars on alternative fuels and power our homes with more sustainable energies.

Let’s focus our attention on how to make eco-friendly practices more practical and accessible to more people.

Let’s not draw lines in the sand between those who are “green” and those who aren’t.

Let’s teach by example how to live more harmoniously with the Earth…this includes showing compassion to all beings on this planet– even those beings who don’t agree with us.

Let’s add more loving and peaceful energy to the Earth by living this way every day.

Let’s shout for joy with appreciation for the millions of instances of resiliency, renewal and abundance that our Earth shows us each day…if we stop and notice it.
